So what are we learning about in Second Grade right now?

Religion--We have officially starting learning about and preparing for our First Holy Communion!  Woo-hoo!  We are currently focused on learning about the Liturgy of the Word.  We will be learning about the parts of the Mass, including responses, during this unit, so please make a strong effort to attend Mass regularly with your child. 

English--We are continuing to learn how to use capitals and correct punctuation during morning "Tune Ups."  We are finishing our unit on nouns and adjectives and will be moving on to verbs.  We will learn about subjects and predicates, as well as verb tenses.

Spelling-- "Bonus Spellers" is well under way. That means if your child has a perfect pretest then they will be given the bonus list of words to work on instead for the week. (PLEASE REMEMBER THAT BONUS LISTS REQUIRE MORE STUDY TIME!) Please remember to make a master list of our Spelling words so you are ready for review tests every 6th unit, as well as the weekly review words. The remaining units will focus on compound words, contractions, adding -ed and -ing, prefixes and suffixes. Our next review will not be until the end of the year. That final review test will have 50 words from any of the previous lists from the year.

Reading--We have finished our units on author's purpose and nonfiction text features and have moved on to the skill of drawing conclusions.  We have stressed the need to use text and/or picture clues along with your "schema" to draw a conclusion or to make an inference.  We are also continuing to work on answering text evidence comprehension questions using a variety of texts.

Writing--We will be creating some adjective rainbows soon, so feel free to check them out.  I am also looking into a couple of other writing projects that we can display in the hallway.  Please be on the lookout!

Math--We are working hard on Rocket Math and learning our basic facts quickly and accurately. (Be sure to ask your student what their Rocket Math goal is and what level or letter they are on so we can keep them moving in the right direction.) We are currently working on subtracting multi-digit numbers using a variety of strategies.

Science/Social Studies--We are learning so much with our Simple Solution books!  In Social Studies we are learning about early America, as well as how our government works .  In Science, we are continuing to learn about plants and animals, although some lessons on the stars, moon and matter are quickly approaching.   Be sure to ask your child about the STEM/STEAM activities that we will be doing throughout the year with Mrs. Zlatic as well!

Extras-- Be sure to ask your child about our brainbuilding activities and what they are doing to try to earn a brain bead.  Our new read aloud book during snack is The Doll People.

1. Practice Spelling words---final test on Friday

2. Work on the Common Core (Math/ELA) paper---due on Friday

                   3. Read the fluency homework with an adult---due on Friday                                     

 4. Complete assigned Simple Solutions lesson---due on Monday, Wednesday and Friday (quiz on every 5th day!)

5. Practice prayers and basic facts (until they are memorized) 

6. Read at least 10 minutes a day (and complete your log)
